Out of the many risks Arizona's species' of Desert Tortoises face is that of released helium balloons. Due to large amounts of desert topography, many times, helium balloons released by humans land in the desert. Tortoises and other animals will typically eat balloons that have landed in their habitat. When this happens, the animal is typically killed from the balloon blocking its digestive tract. The reason being is the blockage makes it impossible for the animal's stomach to absorb any nutrients. So the next time you're celebrating a moment in life, please take the lives of Arizona's wildlife friends into consideration.
